A former San Mateo County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to five months in county jail after pleading no contest earlier this year to felony workers’ compensation fraud charges, prosecutors announced Wednesday.
Jorden Faatiga, 35, entered a no contest plea in April to felony charges of workers’ compensation fraud and filing a false document and on Tuesday was sentenced to the county jail term starting in January, along with two years’ probation and paying restitution of more than $61,000 to the county, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said that Faatiga reported an injury to his right elbow suffered while on duty and filed a workers’ compensation claim, then received benefits while working a modified role.
However, investigators found surveillance footage that showed Faatiga lifting weights, driving and engaging in intense gym workouts in contradiction to the restrictions he reported to his treating physician, and regularly misrepresented the symptoms of his injury to doctors, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Following his conviction, he was deemed ineligible by the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to serve as a law enforcement officer in California.
Faatiga’s defense attorney was not immediately available Wednesday to comment on the case.
Faatiga remains out of custody but prosecutors said a judge ordered him to surrender at the county jail on Jan. 9 to serve his sentence.
