A San Mateo man who was stabbed at the Redwood City Caltrain station on Aug. 27 has died and the suspect has been apprehended, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect, 31-year-old Redwood City resident Jose Gomez Bustamante, was apprehended around 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 28 on the 2600 block of El Camino Real in Redwood City.
“We extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to the loved ones of the deceased,” said Sheriff Christina Corpus in a press release. “I am grateful to all Sheriff’s Office personnel who acted swiftly to safely apprehend the suspect to bring him to justice.”
The victim has been identified by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office as Joseph Carreiro, 66, of San Mateo.
Shortly before 5 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Redwood City Caltrain Station due to reports of a stabbing on the southbound platform. Carreiro had serious injuries and was transported to a local trauma center. The Sheriff’s Office learned he passed away at 9:40 p.m. that night.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Carreiro and Bustamante were seen on bicycles when they had a confrontation that eventually led to the stabbing. A unidentified female was also involved; the Sheriff’s Office says she is a witness.
It is the second homicide in Redwood City this year.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with photos or videos from before, during or after the incident to submit them through a secure portal.
Caltrain closed the southbound platform at the Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City stations. The stabbing caused significant delays across Caltrain’s network, with one train canceled. Caltrain warned passengers to expect 15- to 20-minute delays that night.
The Redwood City Police Department and San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office assisted with the investigation.
