A Menlo Park resident died on Thursday afternoon from injuries that he had suffered in an assault on University Avenue in East Palo Alto, police said in a news release.
East Palo Alto police said they had arrested the suspect later in the afternoon.
The victim, a 52-year-old man, suffered significant facial injuries during the assault, that reportedly occurred on the 2300 block of University Ave, near Runnymede Street. Police came to the scene at about 2:21 p.m., after they received reports of a man acting erratically and disrobing in public.
When officers got to the scene, the injured man reported that he had been assaulted and identified the man who assaulted him. Officers contacted and detained that individual, whose name the Police Department is withholding as the investigation proceeds.
The suspect was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on charges of assault resulting in great bodily injury and violation of parole, according to East Palo Alto police.
The Menlo Park resident was taken to Stanford Hospital for treatment. At about 5 p.m., the hospital notified the Police Department that he had succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation remains active and police plan to release more details as they become available, according to the news release. Police said the city’s last murder had occurred in April 2024.
