The Portola Valley School District has appointed local parent Robert Kang-Xing Jin to fill the school board vacancy left by the resignation of former Trustee Amod Setlur. Jin will serve the remaining 13 months of Setlur’s seat.

“We are fortunate to be a part of PVSD, and I would be honored to help support it,” he wrote in his personal statement.

According to a district press release, Jin was selected in a thorough public interview and selection process during a Nov. 17 meeting. He is a longtime parent of the district with experience in governance, commitment to public education and carries expertise in technology and organizational leadership. 

As a volunteer on the district’s AI Task Force Jin is already an active member of the district. On the committee, he is involved with supporting the team’s efforts to integrate technology and artificial intelligence in the educational space. He holds a degree in Computer Science from Harvard University. 

In his professional life, he works as a consultant in technology and business strategy and previously held multiple leadership roles at Meta from 2006-2023. 

As an active community member, Jin serves on the boards of various local and national organizations including Civic News Company and Rebuilt Local News. He is also an advisory board member for the Stanford Center for Digital Health. 

In his public statement and application, Jin shared his desire to contribute to the district’s ongoing work in teaching and learning, technology integration, wellness, safety and government. He specifically spoke on the importance of supporting the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan goals, helping the schools leverage the benefits of new technologies and strengthening programs such as the Science of Reading Initiative and the CA Math Framework. 

Jin also emphasized the importance of transparency and focusing on thoughtful governance practices centered around student learning. 

According to the distinct, Jin’s appointment will remain provisional for a 30-day period, as required by law.
