Across special districts covering the Midpeninsula, incumbents are running unopposed, and some district boards do not have enough candidates to fill the available seats.
The deadline to run for election was Aug. 7 at 5 p.m., or Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. if no eligible incumbent filed by the earlier deadline. In cases where the number of candidates equals the number of available seats, elected boards can choose to cancel the election and instead appoint the candidates to the seats. Appointed candidates serve their terms as if they had been elected. If candidates are not appointed, an election must be held, and districts are required to pay the San Mateo County Elections Office to administer it.
If an elected board chooses not to appoint the candidates, any eligible voter can file to run as a write-in candidate from Sept. 7 through Oct. 20.
If not enough candidates file to run for office, an elected board can appoint someone to fill the vacancy.
Ladera Recreation District
The Ladera Recreation District, a special district that runs an aquatics and recreation facility in the unincorporated neighborhood of Ladera, has all five seats on its governing board up for election. Three four-year terms and two two-year terms were set to go before voters. However, only two candidates filed to run for the full-term seats, and one candidate filed for a short-term seat.
Incumbent Brian Wall filed to run for reelection to a full term, and Helen Wang, who was previously appointed to the board, filed to run for a short term. Shawn Salmon, a product marketing lead, filed to run for a four-year seat.
Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, Ward 6
Retired programmer Bryan Beck was the only candidate to run to represent Ward 6, which includes Woodside, Portola Valley, Atherton, Menlo Park and Redwood City, on the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District Board of Directors. Incumbent Margaret MacNiven, who co-founded Buck’s Restaurant in Woodside with her husband, did not seek reelection.
Sequoia Healthcare District, Zone E
Psychologist Brian Greenberg is running to represent Zone E, which includes Woodside and Portola Valley, on the Sequoia Healthcare District Board of Directors. The seat was previously vacant.
Menlo Park Fire Protection District
All three incumbents, Chuck Bernstein, Gary Bloom and Robert Jones, are seeking reelection to the Menlo Park Fire Protection District Board of Directors.
West Bay Sanitary District
Two incumbents, Edward Moritz and Roy Thiele-Sardina, are seeking reelection to the West Bay Sanitary District Board of Directors.
