Local residents who have died recently include:
James David Eakin, 98, a longtime Portola Valley resident and educator who was born in Oregon, served in the U.S. Army in occupied Japan and came away with great admiration for Japanese culture. He studied at the Sorbonne and embarked on a 100-day bike tour through France, Spain, Italy and Austria, and later worked as head of the language department at San Mateo’s Aragon High School. In 1968 became one of the founding members at Cañada College, later tutored foreign tech workers in English and loved golf, cooking and discussing the finer points of grammar. He died on May 21.
