As the wildfires rage on in Los Angeles County, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has asked local fire authorities to examine the county’s fire preparedness and brief the board on risks.

In their Jan. 14 meeting, Supervisor Ray Mueller urged the board to create an ad hoc committee studying the LA fires and assessing local readiness for an emergency response. Supervisor Jackie Speier requested that Cal Fire and other first responders brief the board on all elements of their response plans and boost fire risk mitigation measures among county residents.

“As we hear the concerns of elected officials and residents, especially in our rural unincorporated communities, it’s clear: we must act now to strengthen our readiness for disasters of this scale,” Mueller said during the meeting.

The August 2020 CZU complex wildfires, which burned over 40,000 acres of land in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties, looms fresh in the memory of county residents.

“We have many areas in our county that are much like the Pacific Palisades area. Let’s use this tragedy as a reminder that we can and must improve our readiness,” Speier said.

Speier recommended creating a county-wide campaign where local city councils work with residents to implement home hardening measures, such as creating defensible space around their properties.

More than 150 firefighters from departments in the county have been deployed to fight the fires in LA, along with firefighting equipment.
