Each week, Embarcadero Media takes a look at home sales activity along the Midpeninsula in the communities of Atherton, East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Portola Valley and Woodside. Home sales are provided by California Resource, a real estate information company that obtains the information from counties’ recorder’s offices. Information is recorded from deeds after the close of escrow and published within four to eight weeks. Here’s a look at home sales activity between June 17 and July 12 that was made public the week of Aug. 5.

Of particular interest this week … The 106-year-old, wood-shingled Palo Alto bungalow where members of legendary eclectic rock band the Grateful Dead chose their iconic name sold for $2.9 million on July 10. Located in the Professorville neighborhood, the two-bedroom home is considered a significant place of importance in Grateful Dead history.  It was on the front porch where lead guitarist and vocalist Jerry Garcia reportedly landed on the group’s name in November 1965. As the story goes, Phil Lesh invited his bandmates from the Warlocks  — Garcia, Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann — over to the home, which he was renting at the time, to find a new name after discovering another band also was called the Warlocks. Garcia was flipping through a dictionary when he randomly found the entry “Grateful Dead” — and the rest is history.
