The Menlo Park Police Department is warning residents to take precautions against car thefts as part of Vehicle Theft Prevention Month.
Vehicle thefts are on the rise nationwide, and data suggests a similar trend may be occurring in Menlo Park.
The city tracks stolen and recovered vehicles together, so statistics specific to thefts alone are not publicly available. However, 27 stolen or recovered vehicles were reported in the first six months of 2025, compared with 11 during the same period last year. By contrast, pre-pandemic figures show 22 and 29 vehicles reported in the first half of 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Police recommend residents take the following steps to deter theft:
- Park in well-lit, high-traffic areas.
- Lock doors and activate car alarms, even in driveways.
- Keep valuables out of sight.
- Never leave keys in the vehicle, even briefly.
- Do not leave a running vehicle unattended.
