A hydrogen fuel station and one or more hydrogen-powered vehicles are in the works for the city maintenance yard in Menlo Park — at minimal cost to the city — in part because of Menlo Park’s location on the county’s border.

The City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County is in talks with vendors to convert some public vehicles to run on hydrogen alone or a blended fuel and is planning several hydrogen depots in the county, including at the northern and southern borders, said Richard Napier, the executive director of C/CAG.

The fuel and vehicle conversions to hydrogen power would be free for city vehicles, said Menlo Park City Manager David Boesch.

The Menlo Park station may use solar panels to help provide electricity to run it, Public Works Director Kent Steffens told the Almanac. “We would hope to wind up (negotiations with the county) in the next month or so,” he said.
