Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be joined by state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, at Sequoia High School in Redwood City today to sign a bill that bans teenagers from using electronic devices while driving.
SB 33, introduced by Sen. Simitian, prohibits drivers under age 18 from using electronic devices such as cell phones, pagers and laptops while driving.
The bill passed the state Senate on Aug. 30 by a vote of 23 to 14.
Under the bill, first-time violators will be fined $20 and fines of $50 will be issued for subsequent violations.
Gov. Schwarzenegger and Sen. Simitian will convene at Sequoia High School, 1201 Brewster Ave., at 1:15 p.m.
Last year, Gov. Schwarzenegger signed SB 1613 (also authored by Sen. Simitian), which prohibits drivers from using cell phones unless they are hands-free devices.
Both laws will go into effect July 1, 2008.
