The Menlo Park nonprofit job training center Opportunities Industrialization Center West is holding its annual open house, complete with a barbecue and live jazz, on Sept. 20.
The event is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. at the OICW campus at 1200 O’Brien Drive.
At the event, OICW staff will announce a new name for the nonprofit, which provides job training, counseling, teen services and child development programs at low or no cost. Gosh, it’s hard to imagine why they’d want to get rid of a catchy moniker like Opportunities Industrialization Center West.
To RSVP, call 330-6429, or send an e-mail to hhanson@oicw.org.
Roz’s Pacific row postponed for a year
“Failure is temporary; it’s giving up that makes it permanent.”
Roz Savage won’t be rowing across the Pacific Ocean this year. The British rower, who lived in Woodside this summer, now plans her solo voyage for next year.
On Aug. 23, Ms. Savage was airlifted from her boat by the U.S. Coast Guard after tempestuous seas damaged several key pieces of equipment in her custom boat.
She says in her blog, RozSavage.com, that the delay caused by leaving her boat, finding it again and repairing it — coupled with forecasts of bad weather — made it necessary to give up this year’s attempt.
Last year, Ms. Savage completed a solo row across the Atlantic, and says she’s still determined to become the first woman to row alone across the Pacific.
