Portola Valley’s Town Council is looking for volunteers interested in serving on the Planning Commission to fill a soon-to-be-vacant seat.

Ann Wengert, a commission member since January 2004, moves to the council in December to take the place of Councilman Ed Davis, who decided not to run for re-election.

The commission addresses land-use and development policies, grants and oversees conditional use permits, reviews variance applications and matters having to do with zoning and subdivisions, and advises the council on general plan issues.

Candidates must apply by letter to the council by Jan. 11.

Commissioners serve four-year terms and meet in the Historic Schoolhouse every first and third Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Why no council election?

In August, the Town Council appointed Ms. Wengert and incumbent Councilman Steve Toben to the council rather than having an election on Nov. 6 because they were the only candidates for the two open seats. Another factor: not having an election saves the town about $6,000.
