The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District will host a public meeting tonight to hear expert advice on the best ways to develop a wildland fire management policy.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Hillview Community Center, located at 97 Hillview Ave. in Los Altos.
A Cal Fire battalion chief, California State Parks resource ecologist and wildland fire consultant will provide advice on issues, including emergency escape routes and fire equipment access, creating clearance zones around residential structures and access roads, and residential fire infrastructure.
In addition, panelists will speak about local, regional and state fire response planning efforts as well as fuel and fire behavior modeling.
District fire management operations already include maintaining a series of disc lines, brushing vegetation away from roads and trails, maintaining roads for emergency access, and clearing vegetation from area structures, according to the district. The district also partakes in regional fire plans and community wildfire protection plans.
A draft fire policy stemming from tonight’s meeting is expected to be available for public review in early 2008, according to the district.
