The U.S. Postal Service plans to move out of its main Menlo Park post office at 3875 Bohannon Drive as part of a nationwide effort to cut costs.

The Postal Service will shift about 50 Menlo Park carriers to Palo Alto in a restructuring on the Peninsula that includes selling a historic building at 380 Hamilton Ave. in Palo Alto, according to Postal Service spokesman James Wigdel, who said the Bohannon Drive building in Menlo Park will also be sold.

The plan is to move operations, not close them, he said, noting that the relocation can take up to six months. “All the employees, all the P.O. boxes and services will remain the same,” Mr. Wigdel added. He said the carriers will pick up the mail in Palo Alto and then deliver to Menlo Park as usual.

According to the spokesman, the Postal Service plans to open a replacement office in Menlo Park that “will be substantially smaller. Right now, the Menlo Park Main Post Office is about 25,000 square feet and we will be looking for a space that is about 3,000 square feet.”

Menlo Park has two other post offices, at 655 Oak Grove Ave. and at 2120 Avy Ave.

  1. Since the current facility is owned by the Bohannon family, one might wonder what new bigger and higher building will replace this one.

  2. According to Palo Alto online, the address of the building being sold in Palo Alto is 380 Hamilton. It is the beautiful (and giant) old post office. Sad.

  3. The property is owned by the postal service not Bohannon. Maybe he will buy it. This would bring in needed property tax dollars. Also, the government is deliquent in the payment of services provided and collected through the tax rolls. These services have not been paid for since 2006.

  4. This story says the post office will sell a “historic four-story building” in Palo Alto.

What building would that be? Or is this just sloppy reporting?

  5. Two things:
    1) They just finished fixing the roof and redoing the driveway at Bohannon – there goes those tax dollars down the drain!
    2) Does it not seem like overkill that there will still be 3 post offices in a small city like MP? Seems to me more like they shouldn’t replace Bohannon, should also close down the Avy Ave one, and simply expand Oak Grove (or re-locate it nearby), since it’s the one that is always busy.
