A 14-year-old boy walking in the vicinity of Willow Road and Newbridge Street in Menlo Park on Wednesday night (July 30) was punched and robbed of his $800 cellphone by “two gang-member types,” Menlo Park police said.
The incident occurred about 8 p.m., but police learned of it some four hours later when the boy’s mother called 911, police said.
Police are investigating the incident.

An $800 cell phone for a 14 year old boy, you have got to be kidding ! What were he and his parents thinking ?
That they wanted to buy him the best?
Everybody’s perspective is a little different. Maybe there was a good reason for that expenditure even though, to some of us, it might seem unnecessary or unusual.
It’s their money. Their choice. Their son. No?
I’m sure they kept the receipts to verify it.
Of course he had the best. He lives in the most affluent neighborhood in the South Bay Area.
All smartphones are technically $600-$800, but you get ‘deals’ for $99-$199 from your provider. Of course you still pay the tax on the full amount.
Are you all for real?! A teenager was assaulted in Menlo Park and all you can talk about is the cost of the phone. This shallow behavior is what gives the peninsula a bad name. I hope the child is ok – that really all that matters. Then putting an end to crime is next. Get a little perspective folks!
I doubt they got the phone value right, OR maybe they thought the insurance company would read the almanac?
Really, totally agree. A teen gets assaulted and all people care about is the property taken? How about the teen? Hope he’s ok!
I recently read on Nextdoor Woodside about something very similar to this happening to a teen outside the Woodside Road Safeway in Redwood City. It was a few weeks ago. I don’t know if she was robbed though. Scary.
Wow!!! Really? Am I actually reading that the major concern from some replies, focused on the amount of a cell phone and not the crime?
Just in case you missed it, I will sum it up for you. As an innocent child walked in the vicinity of Newbridge and Willow Road, he was robbed of his phone. There’s no dollar amount associated with this phone. However, an innocent child was victimized by “two gang-member types”. As a resident of this community, I’m concerned that these innocent crimes are just the beginning of more crimes to happen.
Usually, the Menlo Park Police Department, solves crimes of this nature in several days. I hope to hear about the speedy arrest.

I totally agree with the people who posted that what is important is the young man’s condition. Second, that this type of assault and theft is happening at all, and far too often.
The only reason I posted about the value of the phone was to answer the first poster’s implied criticism of the parents’ purchase of a phone that the poster considered “too expensive”.
You are all so right! The cost of the phone is a moot point. And what neighborhood someone lives in is also not the point.

JulieToo – I agree – the well-being of the child is what matters. What a scary thing to experience.
As a matter of deterrence, I think it’s smart for parents to teach their kids – and themselves – not to have their phones out while walking around in public. It’s a common theft, and an easy one for the thieves.
The well-being of the child is what’s important. Who cares the amount paid for the phone. He is only doing what he sees adults do, constant yacking constantly on their cell phone!!
