Lisa Gauthier, East Palo Alto Mayor, Paul Bocanegra, a victim, homeless and juvenile justice advocate, and Maggie Cornejo, a former county legislative aide, have all filed papers to run for San Mateo County Supervisor Warren Slocum’s District 4 seat in 2024, according to county and state records.

Gauthier, senior vice president of Inclusion and Belonging at Silicon Valley Leadership Group and a longtime East Palo Alto City Council member, filed her campaign statement of organization on April 21 while Bocanegra, a county juvenile justice advocate, filed his on Oct. 28, 2022. Cornejo, a former aide to Slocum, is the newest candidate; she filed her paperwork on July 31, according to the San Mateo County Public Portal for Campaign Finance Disclosure and the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC).

Gauthier already has a sizable headstart in her fundraising, having garnered $34,681 in cash between Jan. 1 and June 30 this year, according to her FPPC campaign disclosure statement. She has a cash balance of $31,691 after expenses. Gauthier has also received the highest number of large donations – 12 contributions of $1,000 each – which include support from Jennifer DiBrienza, Palo Alto Unified School District Board president, Carol Dutra-Verace, the mayor of Union City, Britnee Gauthier, the site coordinator for Emerson Collective (an educational nonprofit organization founded by Laurene Powell Jobs), and from Supervisor Slocum, among others.

Bocanegra, of Redwood City, is a longtime county justice system and victim advocate. He is a California Democratic Delegate to state Sen. Josh Becker, and is also Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Commissioner – Legislative Coordinator for the County of San Mateo. He is also an advocate for the homeless and a certified drug and substance counselor. He received one large cash donation of $1,000 from Sen. Becker for Senate 2024 and has $4,000 in loans he made to his campaign. In all, during the Jan. 1 through June 30 period, he garnered a total of $8,639, with a current cash balance of $7,467.

Cornejo, a District 4 legislative aide until February and director of government and community relations at Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula, hasn’t filed a campaign finance statement yet. As a county legislative aide for outgoing Supervisor Slocum, she handled constituent issues and partnerships with the North Fair Oaks community and is a liaison to the nonprofit community. She is a North Fair Oaks native and lives in District 4.

The California primary election takes place on March 5, 2024.
