On July 3, Dashi Japanese Restaurant closed after 26 years in Menlo Park. Owner John Bek said his landlord Meta terminated the lease after years of declining sales caused in part due to Meta ending the lease of nearby office spaces to commercial tenants. A spokesperson for the strip mall where Dashi was located said it was evicted due to failing to meet lease terms and not paying rent. Bek disagrees. The closure was first announced in the July 2 edition of The Almanac. Online readers reacted sharply. Photo by Seeger Gray.

“Dashi was one of the best restaurants that I ever ate at. The food was always excellent and the service always made you feel like they cared about you. As a resident of East Palo Alto, did either city council (Menlo Park or East Palo Alto) step up to argue for John and Sunny’s support? I would hope that our elected leaders would take time to advocate for a beloved institution of their constituents. If they did not, I would also put forward that this is part of the problem over here, elected leaders who do not seem to care about making sure that residents have access to nice things and amenities like Dashi. Thank you John for the many years of excellent food and service.”

“I am incredibly saddened to hear that Dashi is closing. My family has been coming here for 15 years, and it has been such a special part of our lives— my kids literally grew up eating here. It is heartbreaking to see a local establishment that provided so much warmth and community be forced out by Meta. Meta’s decision has needlessly destroyed the livelihood of a dedicated local business owner and unfortunately forced hard working staff to lose their jobs as well. John, thank you for all the wonderful meals and for making us feel like family every time we walked through your doors. You and your team will be truly missed.”

“It’s a very sad day and news that Dashi is forced to close its doors. I was a customer at first but over the next few years, I became good friends with John, long before Meta/Facebook was there. John is super funny and charismatic plus he is a great sushi chef. It is a perfect recipe for a great dinner at Dashi. He would always go out of his way to treat his customers right and made special dishes that didn’t even exist on the menu.  Interestingly, on a recent trip to Hawaii, I learned that locals and natives aren’t exactly happy Mark Zuckerberg bought a half an island for himself either. There should be firm regulations in place not permitting these types of actions where super businesses and millionaires owners can simply erase one’s livelihood and change affect people’s lives for the worse. John didn’t deserve this and should have been grandfathered in his lease terms indefinitely.”
