A former Boys and Girls Club of East Palo Alto staffer was sentenced to eight years behind bars. Special to Bay City News/New Africa.

A Menlo Park woman who stabbed her coworker has been sentenced to eight years in state prison, according to a note sent to press by San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

The woman, Sandra Figueroa, 23, was 18 at the time of the stabbing. She and her 17-year-old girlfriend plotted to kill her coworker for reasons that remain unknown. Figueroa worked with her victim at the Boys & Girls Club in East Palo Alto.

The two women met up in Redwood City on March 17, 2020, and Figueroa stabbed the victim three times in the neck, resulting in non-life-threatening stab wounds.

Following the stabbing, Figueroa and her girlfriend were arrested not far from the Mexican border, according to Wagstaffe.

Figueroa pleaded no contest to charges of attempted murder on Aug. 7, and was sentenced on Tuesday, Sept. 24, according to Wagstaffe. She was sentenced to seven years for the attempted murder, plus an additional year for a weapon use enhancement, for a total of eight years.

Figueroa is expected to serve just over two years of the sentence in state prison, as she received a credit for time served in the county jail while the case made its way through the courts.

She was also ordered to pay $1,590 to the victim, and has been ordered not to contact her.
