Two solo motorcycle crashes occurred just hours apart on Highway 84 in La Honda on Saturday, Sept. 19, with one rider airlifted to the hospital and the other rescued after falling 75 feet down an embankment.
Both motorcyclists were transported to the hospital and were in stable condition, according to Cal Fire officials.
The first crash was reported around 1:57 p.m. and required the rider to be airlifted to the hospital. The rider suffered moderate injuries, said California Highway Patrol Officer Sophie Lu.
The second incident occurred at 4:40 p.m. and was caused by the rider failing to navigate around a curve in the roadway, according to Lu.
Cal Fire officials said the motorcyclist went off the road and landed 75 feet down an embankment. Paramedics had to go down the hill and use a rope system to pull the rider up before transporting them to the hospital.
Both crashes occurred westbound on Highway 84, east of Hildebrand Road. The circumstances of both crashes are still under investigation, said Lu.
La Honda Fire Brigade and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
“While the CHP-Redwood City is investigating the cause of these crashes, we would like to remind people to slow down and drive with caution on our mountain roads,” Cal Fire posted on X.
