Here’s when Arsicault, Pineapple King and more are coming to the Peninsula

Earlier this week, I spent some time combing through a list of restaurants that are planning on opening in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties to see if there were any trends that stood out. And while there was a diverse assortment of cuisines and price points, one subsection appeared more prominent than the rest: cafes and bakeries.

Interestingly, most of these soon-to-open cafes aren’t your typical third-wave coffee shop (specializing in bean quality and offering traditional coffee), but rather focused on ethnic flavors (think cajeta or mazapan lattes), Japanese matcha (Bonbon Matcha, Maruwu Secicha and Unique Green are all continuing to expand) or Chinese tea (such as Auntea Jenny, Tong Sui and Chagee). And in Palo Alto’s Cal Ave area, which notably has a dearth of patisserie, two croissant-focused businesses are planning their debuts.

Stay tasty,
Adrienne

Cult-favorite bakeries such as Pineapple King and Arsicault are expanding south to the Peninsula, and matcha spots including Bonbon Matcha and Maruwu Seicha are continuing to broaden their Silicon Valley footprint.

Pork potstickers from Dumpling City

Pork potstickers and pork dumplings with Napa cabbage ($12 each) from Dumpling City in Palo Alto. Photo by Adrienne Mitchel.

Located along El Camino Real in Palo Alto is an unassuming frozen dumpling spot called Dumpling City. Walk inside and you’ll hear the tunes of peaceful Chinese music and see employees sitting on stools methodically rolling and wrapping all sorts of dumplings.

The only barrier that separates you from them is a cash register, located near the entryway, and two chest-style freezers with sliding glass lids. Dig around in the freezers and sift through packages of handmade dumplings, in all sorts of shapes and flavors (such as chicken and corn, or lamb and zucchini) before paying at the cash register.

Now the dumplings aren’t the most affordable (for example, a pack of 12 potstickers costs $12, which is significantly more than grocery store prices), but they taste exceptional. The dough is plush and chewy, and the filling is so juicy that biting into them squirts liquid everywhere. It’s a huge departure from frozen grocery store dumplings.

Dumpling City, 3487 El Camino Real, Palo Alto; 650-272-6715. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
