Two people died in a fire at Avenue Liquors in the early morning hours of Monday, according to the Redwood City Police Department.
Police and the Redwood City Fire Department arrived at the liquor store, located at 2147 Roosevelt Ave., to find it fully engulfed in flames, around 5:30 a.m., and said they began containing the fire. During their efforts, they opened the roof and found the two bodies inside the store. Both were deceased and showed “severe burns.”
According to police, it is unknown whether they were living inside the liquor store or why they were there so early in the morning. The individuals have not yet been identified.
The store owner is cooperating with the investigation.
The facade of the building is not noticeably charred, though a noxious smell is detectable hundreds of feet from the scene. The parking lot of the strip mall is closed to the public, blocked off with yellow tape.
Several concerned citizens lined the perimeter of the lot Monday morning, as some pointed toward the burnt building.
This remains an active investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Redwood City Police Department at (650) 780-7100.
