The San Mateo County Superior Court began electronically serving documents on Oct. 7 to attorneys handling civil, family, and probate cases ahead of the July 1, 2025, state deadline.
Attorneys will automatically receive electronic documents, known as eService, for court-issued documents that must be transmitted, delivered, or served pursuant to the provisions outlined in the California Code of Civil Procedure and 1010.6.
The switch to electronic will help the court reduce costs amid state budget cuts to trial courts. The state made approximately $1.45 million in annual reductions to San Mateo County Superior Court, causing the court to make changes to its services.
Examples of common documents that will be subjected to eServices include Notice of Hearing, Notice of Order, Notice of Assignment, and Notice of Judgment.
The eService will be be secured by way a multi-factor authentication process. Those using the eService will receive a link in their email with an access code that will direct parties to a secure website requiring a unique, time-sensitive verification provided by a second email.
Once access is established with the verification code, the document will be enabled for download only.
Once enrolled in eService, self-represented litigants will no longer receive service by mail from the Court unless consent to receive eService is revoked.
For parties without attorney representation they may enroll in eService before the Oct. 7 launch date.
More information on the eService, along with Judicial Council of California forms links, will be made available on the Court’s website.
