San Mateo County board supervisors on Tuesday moved to address gender inequities by directing the county executive to create a new staff position to carry out the Action Plan for Women and Children, which focuses on improving opportunities for women and children.

The plan focuses on four key policy areas: bridging the wealth gap, increasing access to quality child care, preventing domestic violence, and expanding reproductive health and health care freedom.

Supervisors Noelia Corzo and Dave Pine, who co-sponsored the resolution, said the plan would benefit the entire community.

“We anticipate that this staff position and action plan will drive economic prosperity for our whole county,” Corzo said at Tuesday’s board meeting. “By addressing barriers to equity that women themselves have identified, we can make life better for all our residents.”

Pine said that while childcare challenges impact all caregivers, “lack of access to quality child care impacts women and women of color the most.”

“We learned many lessons from the pandemic, but one of them was a reminder of the role that women play in our economy and the particular economic challenges they face,” Pine said.

The position, along with its salary and benefits, has yet to be determined, according to a county spokesperson.
