The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with other local agencies will hold an anonymous gun buyback event on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 400 Harbor Blvd. in Belmont.

“Gun buyback events provide a safe and anonymous avenue for community members to remove unwanted firearms from their homes, leading to a safer San Mateo County,” said Sheriff Christina Corpus in a prepared release. “Turning in unwanted firearms helps prevent tragic accidents involving unsecure firearms and is another strategy to help prevent firearms from ending up in the wrong hands.”

Since the Sheriff’s Office began hosting anonymous gun buyback events in 2018, nearly 3,000 firearms have been collected and safely destroyed, according to the Sheriff’s Office. In the spring of 2024, the Sheriff’s Office gun buyback event yielded 297
firearms, including 24 assault weapons, four ghost guns and one machine gun.

Free gun locks will be distributed at the event.

All firearms will be accepted without question. Cash incentives range from $50 to $200. Funds are subject to availability. Firearms should be unloaded and securely stored in the trunk of the vehicle prior to arrival.

The program is funded by the County of San Mateo, in partnership with the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and with grassroots support from Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buy Back, a local community group.

Participating law enforcement agencies include the Belmont Police Department, the Menlo Park Police Department and the Redwood City Police Department.
