Menlo School scored five straight goals covering the second and third periods to establish a seven-goal lead en route to a 12-9 nonleague boys’ water polo victory at Bellarmine on Saturday.
Knights’ Tommy Keesling recorded four steals to lead the defense ahead of goalie Zayd Mahmoud, who had 10 saves.
Menlo’s team defense, especially during the scoring run, fed an aggressive counter attack. Senior Connor MacMitchell took advantage, scoring a majority of his seven goals via the counter.
Jack Murad and Keesling each recorded two assists in adding to the offense.
“We made a lot of little adjustments following our season opener,“ Menlo coach Jack Bowen said. “It was great to see our team gelling and making these adjustments against such a strong program as Bellarmine.”
The Bells were the Central Coast Section runnerups in the Open Division in 2019, the last time the tournament was held.
Girls water polo
Sacred Heart Prep’s Eleanor Facey scored both of her goals within the first two minutes, her teammates went on to add six more before host Presentation got on the scoreboard and the Gators downed the host Panthers, 12-4, in a nonleague contest Saturday.
Alexandra Szczerba had a hand in seven goals for SHP (2-0), scoring twice and adding five assists. She also made four steals.
Riley Hocker led the Gators with three goals. Ashley Penner and Lucy Homer each added a goal.
Brienz Lang chipped in a pair of goals and three assists and Ella Woodhead scored once and recorded three assists.
Goalies Megan Norris and Paedrin Gillett combined for 11 saves, six steals and a .733 save percentage.
