Senior Zach Zafron was one of three players who scored 11 points to help Priory down host Palo Alto, 52-42, in a nonleague boys basketball game Monday night.

Senior David Ajanaku-Makun and sophomore Rostand Olama Abanda each added 11 points for Priory (2-1), which travels to play Pinewood in its West Bay Athletic League opener Thursday.

Zafron hit a pair of 3-pointers and has made at least one 3-pointer in each of his past 12 games, dating to mid-January of 2020, when he was shut out from long range by The King’s Academy.

Zafron has made 40 3-pointers in his past two seasons.

Olama Abanda, whose season high in 19 games last year was nine, has recorded a pair of double-digit games thus far.

Sophomore Tayo Sobemehin and Ashton Axe combined for another 15 points as the Panthers, who led 24-19, slowly increased their lead throughout the contest.

Palo Alto was playing its season opener and opens Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play at Los Altos on Wednesday.

Senior Harrison Carrington scored 18 points and junior Aidan Braccia added 16 as Sacred Heart Prep went on the road and beat Crystal Springs Uplands, 71-29, in a WBAL season opener Monday.

Braccia hit a trio of 3-pointers, extending his streak of least one 3-pointer against WBAL competition to 17 games, dating to January of 2019.

Sophomore RJ Stephens added 10 points for the Gators, who host The King’s Academy on Wednesday night.

SHP scored the first 17 points of the game and built a 25-4 advantage after the first quarter. The Gators also held the rebounding edge, 42-27.

Baseball

Aidan Berger drove in three runs on two hits and Zander Darby and Ben Wingard each drove in a pair as Palo Alto beat visiting Menlo-Atherton, 8-2, in a nonleague game Monday.

John Quinlan and Ethan Bergen drove in runs for the Bears. Collin Galles had two hits.

Josh Donaker and Danny Peters combined on a five-hitter. Donaker went the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Peters, who was slinging footballs three days prebiously, recorded the final seven outs, striking out a pair.

Paly took a 1-0 lead in the first. Xavier Esquer singled, went to second when Darby was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Berger’s sacrifice fly.

The Vikings (4-1) broke it open with a four-run second, highlighted by Darby’s two-run double and Berger’s two-run single.

The Bears (3-5) broke through in the fifth on Bergen’s RBI single and Quinlan’s RBI double.

Menlo-Atherton opens Peninsula Athletic League play with a game at San Mateo on Tuesday afternoon. Palo Alto opens Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play with a road game at Los Gatos on Wednesday.
