Menlo-Atherton’s Griffin Williams made it a pleasant all-around day for Bears baseball. Gunn’s Charlie Deggeller helped turn a bad situation into a walk-off celebration.

Williams pitched a three-hitter, striking out 11 without a walk, and M-A beat host San Mateo, 7-0, in a Peninsula Athletic League opener Tuesday.

Deggeller singled in the bottom of the seventh, capping a wild come-from-behind 10-9 SCVAL victory over visiting Mountain View.

Williams retired 12 of the first 13 hitters he faced, including the first four by strikeout. The Bears made it interesting for him, committing back-to-back errors to open the fifth. Williams got the next batter on a fly out and then induced a double play ball, that he started, to erase the only threat of the day.

Williams also helped himself offensively, driving in three runs on a sacrifice fly in the third and a two-run single in the sixth.

John Quinlan had three hits, scored three times and drove in a run. Tommy Eisenstat contributed three hits, including a double and Will Cronin doubled, singles and drove in a run.

Williams, who took a no-hitter into the sixth, was efficient on the mound, throwing 87 pitches, 65 for strikes (nearly 75 percent). He used 13 pitches to complete the seventh, which included two strikeouts and two hits.

Gunn scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to set up its victory. The Titans were down 9-2 entering the sixth and then saw the first six batters of the inning reach base safely.

Lennon Seiders singled and Jeffrey Maltz walked to spark the rally. Nathan Watkins singled home a run, Cory Hallada reached base on a dropped third strike and Simon Illouz doubled in two runs. Eugene Kim singled home a run and Deggeller followed with a sacrifice fly.

Maltz, Watkins, Hallada and Kim were all pinchhitters.

Quintin Sterling singled to plate another run. He scored the tying run, after stealing second, on Seiders’ second hit of the inning.

In the seventh, two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Deggeller, who singled on an 0-1 pitch to end the game.

Carson Leclerc pitched the final two innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits, to gain credit for the victory.

Illouz went the first 4 1/2 innings and pitched in some bad luck. He gave up one earned run on seven hits. He struck out six and walked two.
