The Woodside High boys basketball team ended a decade of frustration, beating Menlo-Atherton for the first time since Feb. 11, 2011 on Wednesday in a Sequoia District contest.

Luke Buddie made one of two free throws with three seconds remaining as the Wildcats edged M-A, 38-37.

Calvin Kapral scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace the Wildcats (2-1), who play at M-A (0-2) on Friday.

In the West Bay Athletic League, Priory beat host Menlo, 59-46, and Sacred Heart Prep topped Harker, 70-60, as the two will collide Friday at Sacred Heart Prep for early dominance of the league.

Zach Zafran scored 17 points and David Ajanaku-Makin added 16 points to lead Priory (7-1, 5-0). Tayo Sobemehin and Rostand Olama-Obanda combined for another 18 points.

Menlo senior Hunter Riley had a team-high 13 points, eight rebounds and made three assists. Robby Enright, a sophomore, finished with 11 points, Lucas Vogel also scored 11 and Chris Cook added nine points and four rebounds.

With three minutes left in the third, the Knights pulled to within six after sophomore Ty Richardson picked off a Priory pass and found Enright open near the basket.

Aidan Braccia scored 28 points and Harrison Carrington added 24 for SHP (5-2, 5-0) in its win over the Eagles.

Gunn dropped a match at home to Monta Vista, 59-49. Gunn was led by Yotam Elezar’s 16 points. Gavin Kitch added 14 and Jack Hakeman had 10.

Palo Alto fell at home, losing to Homestead, 55-44, in overtime. Addison Lee hit a lay-up with 15 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it at 38. He recorded a steal with seven seconds left but a last-ditch shot glanced off the rim.

Homestead scored the first seven points of overtime to take control.

The Vikings (0-4, 0-3) carried a 30-22 lead into the fourth quarter and Andrew Li hit a 3-pointer for a 33-22 edge.

Lucas Sung hit a free throw to make it 36-29 and Paly went cold, missing golden opportunities to put Homestead away. The Vikings were scoreless until Lee’s tying basket.

In a nonleague game, Kiki Bailey went for 25 points and Pinewood beat visiting Mid-Peninsula, 86-41. The Panthers (2-4) outscored MP, 30-4, in the first quarter.

Jaden Norwood added 11 points as 12 difference players scored for Pinewood.

Noah Takatsuno scored 17 points to lead the Dragons (1-4).

Baseball

Zander Darby’s two-run double in the top of the fourth highlighted a four-run rally that sparked Palo Alto’s 10-2 victory over host Los Gatos in a SCVAL De Anza Division contest Wednesday.

Ryan Harvey and Josh Donaker combined to retire 18 of the final 19 hitters they faced, including the last 11 in a row.

Paly (10-2, 5-0) won its sixth straight and will get another chance against Los Gatos at home Friday.

Hayden Jung-Goldberg collected three hits for the second straight game. Tommy Hall and Darby each had two hits. Hall also drove in two runs for Paly (10-2, 5-0). Ritter Amsbaugh hit a home run.

Enzo Pollioni had two hits but Sacred Heart Prep fell to The King’s Academy, 26-0, and Burlingame edged Menlo, 4-3, in other games.

Girls lacrosse

Genna Gibbons scored three times but Sacred Heart Prep fell to St. Ignatius, 12-7, Wednesday.
