Seniors Hunter Riley and Chris Cook accounted for 28 points on Senior Night as Menlo School beat visiting Harker 64-55 in a West Bay Athletic League game Tuesday to become eligible for the upcoming Central Coast Section boys basketball playoffs.
Riley recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Cook netted 12 points to go with two steals and two blocked shots.
Lucas Vogel also reached double figures in scoring, leading the Knights (6-9, 6-6) with 18 points. He also had five rebounds. Daniel Solomon contributed six assists.
Menlo placed fourth in the WBAL and awaits its postseason fate at Wednesday’s seeding meeting. The playoffs open Friday
The Knights grabbed a 19-4 lead after the first quarter but Harker was able to storm back to within 26-22 by halftime.
Boys golf
Menlo School won’t be going as a team but it will be sending a pair of golfers as individuals to the CCS tournament, which takes place next Tuesday at the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch in Monterey County.
Knights freshman Eric Yun placed sixth in the Region I tournament, shooting a 2-over par round of 73. Mitty’s Nathan Wang earned medalist honors with a superb round of 66.
Marcus Ying also qualified after finishing eighth with a round of 75. Senior Jeremy Yun did not participate as Menlo finished sixth with a team round of 409. The top four teams advance to the overall championship.
Palo Alto’s Kevin Lee qualified for next week’s finals out of Region II, firing a 79, good for 20th overall. Pinewood’s Tylor Chou placed 26th with an 81.
Boys volleyball
Gunn lost its CCS quarterfinal match to second-seeded Monta Vista in straight sets, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18, Tuesday.
Guided by second-year coach Tony Bright, the Titans (6-7) exceeded expectations, winning their first ever CCS match against San Mateo on Monday.
Gunn, which finished third in the SCVAL El Camino Division, battled undefeated SCVAL De Anza Division champ Monta Vista.
Gunn was led by senior captains Boris Butchin and Zach Chang. Butchin had 16 kills and Chang added 15. Sebastian Caldera set everything up with his 27 assists.
Baseball
Adam Collins drove in a run but host Priory fell to Harker 19-5 in a PAL Lake Division contest Tuesday.
Tommy Leong pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Panthers, who finished the regular season 8-5.
Womens volleyball
The U.S. Senior national team dispatched the Netherlands 25-22, 25-15, 25-18 during the second week of the Volleyball Nations League in Rimini, Italy on Tuesday.
Former Stanford All-American Foluke Akinradewo Gunderson recorded nine points on eight kills and a block.
