Half the teams in the Central Coast Section Open Division girls basketball tournament are extremely local, from the Palo Alto Weekly coverage area.
Undefeated Pinewood, as expected, received the No. 2 seed and will host a familiar foe, Palo Alto, which received the No. 7 seed, Friday at 7 p.m.
“We just played Paly two weeks ago,’’ Pinewood coach Doc Scheppler said “And we scrimmaged them, too. I would rather have played someone new. But we’re playing in CCS and that was something we weren’t sure would happen not long ago.’’
No. 5 Priory will play at No. 4 Valley Christian at 7 p.m. and No. 6 Menlo School will play at No. 3 St. Ignatius, Friday at 4 p.m. Mitty, the No. 1 seed and presumptive favorite, will host No. 8 Capuchino.
The Priory boys got their wish after concluding a historic season as West Bay Athletic League champions by being included in the boys Open Division as the No. 7 seed. The Panthers will play at No. 2 Riordan on Saturday at 7.
“It’s great for the league,’’ said Sacred Heart Prep coach Tony Martinelli about the possibility of Priory being included in the Open after losing to the Panthers on Tuesday 60-59 in a game that decided the WBAL title. “They deserve it. It’s good for how people look at the league when there are more teams to consider than just us and Menlo.’’
Sacred Heart Prep received the No. 1 seed in Division IV and will host the Harker-Monte Vista Christian winner Tuesday at 7. Menlo is the No. 3 seed in D-IV, and will also wait until Tuesday to play the Latino College Prep-Pacific Grove winner.
The Palo Alto boys are the No. 6 seed and Menlo-Atherton the No. 7 seed in Division I. Both play their first games Saturday, Paly against the Carlmont-Monta Vista winner and M-A against the Los Gatos-Watsonville winner.
Gunn’s boys team got a No. 9 seed in Division II and will host Westmont on Friday at 7.
The Pinewood boys received a No. 1 seed in the five-team Division V bracket and will get into action Thursday, June 11, against the Mid Peninsula-Crystal Springs Uplands winner.
The Woodside girls, No. 7 in Div. II, host Leigh Saturday at 7.
