Eastside College Prep’s theme for the year revolves around gratitude.
The East Palo Alto private school had to shut down its athletic programs for the 2020-21 school year due to COVID-19.
Eastside opened its doors in the fall, welcoming back its student-athletes. While not entirely recovered, Eastside boys basketball coach Chris Bischof said that’s the least of his worries.
“We had a wave, just like many other schools and now we’re back,” he said. “We had a lot of games postponed and now they’re all rescheduled. We’re grateful to be back in school in person and playing games again.”
Eastside (1-10, 0-5) and visiting Menlo School were able to play their West Bay Athletic League game Sunday because the CIF, the state’s governing body for high school sports, temporarily suspended its rule forbidding competition on Sunday.
“Most of these guys are playing at clubs on Sundays anyway,” Bischof said. “We’ll play any day to get these games in, even if it means four games a week.”
Sunday’s contest, which Menlo won 63-38, became the first sanctioned high school contest in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties to be played on that day of the week.
Lucas Vogel scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the second quarter, when Menlo (11-5, 5-2) took the lead for good.
Eastside Prep, led by Vuka Asikia and Matt Bass, each with 11 points, held a 21-20 edge before the Knights scored the final eight points of the first half.
Daniel Solomon added 12 points for Menlo, which plays at WBAL leader Sacred Heart Prep on Tuesday night.
Eastside, meanwhile, has four more games scheduled this week, beginning with Monday’s game at Crystal Springs Uplands.
“Again, we’re just grateful,” Bischof said.

Defense has been key for the Palo Alto boys basketball team, which won its fifth straight, beating Cupertino 52-33 to maintain its hold on second place in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division.
The Vikings (12-5, 5-1) have allowed an average of 38 points a game during its winning streak while scoring at a 52.0 pace.
Palo Alto has held teams to fewer than 40 points eight times this season while scoring 50 or fewer points on eight occasions.
Lucas Black and Jackson Martin each scored nine points to lead Palo Alto, which plays at Milpitas on Tuesday night.
Sebastian Chancellor added eight points and six assists.
