Huddart Park in Woodside will be temporarily closed from Friday, March 7, through noon on Sunday, March 9, to accommodate a large-scale search and rescue training hosted by the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit. Hundreds of search and rescue volunteers from across Northern California will be attending the exercise, according to a press release by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The community can expect traffic delays as there will be a large presence of slow-moving emergency vehicles coming through Portola Valley and Woodside throughout the weekend, said the Sheriff’s Office. Kings Mountain Road and Skyline Boulevard will see the most traffic on Saturday, March 8, officials said.
The Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit is a volunteer wilderness rescue team specializing in life-saving operations across challenging terrain, weather conditions and high altitude. The organization is affiliated with the Sheriff’s Office and is deployed across the state to help locate lost or stranded people.
In 2024, the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit was deployed on 16 search and rescue missions, totaling 29 days, according to the press release.
The weekend’s training will provide search and rescue teams the opportunity to prepare for various disasters and emergencies while also learning from volunteers from different jurisdictions.
San Mateo County Parks plans to reopen Huddart Park by noon on Sunday once the training is complete and all equipment is removed.
