A fire broke out at a vehicle salvage yard on Bay Road in East Palo Alto near Cooley Landing and Ravenswood Open Space Preserve at around 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 14.
The two-alarm fire, which took place at Infinity Auto Salvage, sent a plume of dark smoke into the air over the San Francisco Bay.
The Menlo Park Fire Protection District responded to the fire with two battalion chiefs, seven engines and two ladder trucks.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it may be linked to a theft which occurred at the property.
“We know a theft occurred which is common at this site,” said Menlo Park Fire Marshal Jon Johnston in an email to this news organization. “We are unsure if it was arson or a fire related to theft of vehicle parts. Still under investigation.”
The fire was extinguished after about two hours, but fire crews remained on scene until nearly midnight to ensure it did not reignite, and to aid in the investigation.
No firefighters or bystanders were injured in the fire, according to the fire department.
