Affirmed Housing announced that construction has begun on Monarch at Redwood, a $70.4 million affordable housing development in North Fair Oaks. The project broke ground on Friday, Aug. 29.

The six-story complex will include 86 apartments for households earning less than 60% of the area median income, with 39 units set aside as permanent supportive housing for residents in county mental health and housing programs.

“In a region where affordability is becoming increasingly rare, this project shows what’s possible when the County, community, and development partners come together with shared values and purpose,” said San Mateo County District 4 Supervisor Lisa Gauthier.

Plans call for rooftop solar panels, bike storage, laundry facilities and a landscaped courtyard. The project will also provide on-site services such as job training, adult education and health support.

The project replaces a small industrial building and wraps around a south-facing courtyard. Setbacks on the upper floors and a butterfly roof are designed to reduce the building’s scale and add visual interest along San Mateo, Douglas and Middlefield roads.

Funding comes from San Mateo County, Housing Trust Silicon Valley and other state and private partners.
