David Luenberger, 88, of Stanford, who was born in Los Angeles, received a master’s degree and a doctorate in electrical engineering from Sanford University, and who conducted groundbreaking research in control theory, optimization, economics, information science and investment science, was one of the co-founders of the university’s Department of Engineering-Economic Systems. He authored six books and was an honorary professor at several international universities, was an accomplished magician, and loved playing jazz piano, skiing, body-surfing, writing short stories and taking photographs. He died on May 19.

Brian Goncher, 69, of Palo Alto, who was born in Cleveland, attended University of Chicago and later worked at the Wold Bank in Chicago, then moved to Berkeley and worked in the corporate office of Bank of America, relocated to the Bay Area in the 1990s and settled into a cottage in Woodside. He served as a financial consultant and became interested in the emerging field of clean energy, established the National Clean Energy Practice at Deloitte in 2004 and helped to launch Winterfest, an annual gathering that focuses on sustainable energy. He later moved to Palo Alto and became a mentor to young people interested in jobs in clean energy. He died on May 30.

Leanne Giles, 78, of Palo Alto, who was born in Provo, Utah, spent a year in Tehran in the 1970s, loved to travel with her family, and who, in 1992, went door to door in Palo Alto to raise money for disaster relief after Hurricane Iniki. She faithfully served her congregation, and loved reading, completing puzzles and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She died on June 2.
