Allegations of misconduct aimed at Chief of Staff Victor Aenlle by the County’s Deputy Sheriff’s Association have led to the Board of Supervisors starting an investigation.

These allegations and other criticisms by the union led to a vote of no confidence on Thursday, which the majority of members approved.

The union said that under Aenlle, policies have been put in place without consulting deputies.

In a letter, the union claimed Aenlle wore a badge he did not have authority to wear, “inserted himself into conversations” affecting sergeants, deputies and correctional officers, and created “a culture of fear.”

Sheriff Cristina Corpus defended Aenlle despite the union’s remarks.

“For the last couple of weeks, special interests seeking to undermine my leadership have sought to bully me with a vote of no confidence against my chief of staff,” Corpus said in a statement.

Corpus insisted that Aenlle will remain chief of staff, dismissing the allegations as “political theater.”

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors said it will investigate the claims.

“The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors is aware of multiple personnel allegations related to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office,” the board said in a statement Thursday.

“We take these allegations very seriously. At the same time, we want to ensure an impartial investigation and assessment of these allegations, to afford all parties fairness and due process.”

Judge LaDoris Cordell will lead the investigation. The board said it anticipates the investigation will “conclude soon.”
