All roads are open following a pedestrian fatality on Wednesday morning, Oct. 14, near Alma Street and Sherwood Way after police closed the intersection and a nearby train crossing.

The Menlo Park Fire Protection District said its first responders were called to the scene at 9 a.m. by police who reported a pedestrian had been hit by a train, but that the individual was pronounced dead before they arrived.

Menlo Park police closed streets near the intersection of Alma Street and Sherwood Way until shortly before 11:30 a.m., and had advised people to avoid the grade crossing heading at eastbound Ravenswood Avenue and westbound Laurel Avenue, according to an alert. At 10:42 a.m., westbound lanes were reopened followed by the eastbound side almost an hour later, police said.

A passenger on a stopped train at San Antonio station said Caltrain announced that trains were single-tracking through the affected part of Menlo Park. She said a number of passengers got off the train and were seeking alternate transportation.

Caltrain canceled several trains and warned of delays of over an hour across the corridor. Caltrain spokesperson Dan Lieberman said shortly before 11 a.m. that the affected train has been released from the scene and that rail traffic was moving in both directions.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office said its investigation was ongoing as of 11 a.m.
