San Mateo County has opened applications for its newly established independent civilian advisory commission on the sheriff’s office.

The commission will comprise seven voting members and two alternates, with appointments made from each County supervisor’s district, the sheriff’s office, and at-large positions by the Board liaisons. Non-voting members will also participate in the Sheriff’s CARE program and the Youth Commission.

All nominations are subject to approval by the full Board of Supervisors.

Meetings are scheduled to occur at least four times a year, with the inaugural session anticipated this summer. While specific dates and locations have not been finalized, the commission is expected to be crucial in advising the Board on community-police relations and public engagement.

San Mateo County residents are encouraged to apply, regardless of their citizenship status. The application deadline is set for 5 p.m. on Feb. 23, 2024. More information can be found here or through contact with Sherry Golestan, the Board of Supervisors deputy clerk at sgolestan@smcgov.org, and Deputy County Executive Adam Ely at aely@smcgov.org or 650-363-4123.

The commission, created by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in December, launched with mixed reviews, with activists citing that it had not met all its expectations.
